The History of Super Mario
Super Mario, created by Nintendo and first released in 1985 as Super Mario Bros., quickly became one of the most influential and beloved video games in history. Designed by Shigeru Miyamoto, Mario was initially featured in the arcade game Donkey Kong in 1981 but rose to global fame through the release of the platform game that defined the side-scrolling genre.
Concept and Creation
Mario's character was inspired by Miyamoto's desire to create a hero who could tackle a variety of challenges in a whimsical world. Named after Nintendo's landlord in America, Mario was given a distinct look with his iconic red hat and mustache to make him easily recognizable in the pixelated graphics of the time. Super Mario Bros. introduced players to the Mushroom Kingdom, filled with enemies, power-ups, and Princess Peach to rescue.
